I don't quite feel right aabout it sitting in a landfill killing the earth if someone can use it. I gave my old helmet away with my bike I sold, granted I don't think I ever rode in it, just tried it on a few times since I didn't like its fit.
Helmets are like $30. If you can afford $100+++ for a bicycle then you can afford $30 for a helmet. The last thing I would want to know is that my old helmet was responsible for a friends death or injury.
There already is plenty of junk in the landfill, I wouldn't worry about adding a helmet to the heap every 2-3 years.
