I hated it when I tried it a few years on my (then) commuting bike. As you mentioned, shifting was awkward and so was braking because the lever tended to move down when I grabbed it. As with all things on these forums, the preceding is one person's opinion and ymmv as the saying goes. Good luck in your quest to find something that works better for you!
