I think another aspect of it is that we in America tend to see going to work sick as normal. You only take time off if you feel so bad you can barely get out of bed. My crazy old boss used to brag about the time he came in and did an assay with 102 degree fever.
I wouldnt say normal...necessary maybe but not normal.
we had a guy @ my co. who came to work to attend a meeting 3 days after open heart surgery. A lot of people treat him like he's a legend, but I'm leaning more towards lunatic.
