Small and packable are the best ways to start. Something I've been struggling with and haven't see too too many solutions for is a good headlamp mount that fits to my helmet so i don't have to have it on my forehead. I know there are other more designated helmet lights but I have a headlamp i use for dog walking trail-running etc. and don't feel the need to have multiple if I don't need to but would just like to have sometihng more secure on a sloped helmet.
