Replacing Shimano Nexus 3 with SRAM T3 wheel (Cable / Cable pull question?)

So, as my other thread mentioned, I am trying to replace a rear wheel (Shimano Nexus 3). I scavenged an old dutch bike SRAM T3 wheel with backpedal break from an abandoned bike.

I have the SRAM cable puller thing (although the casing seems to have come off a bit. perhaps I can fix that, and but the SRAM cable is rusted solid. Can I substitute the Shimano and SRam bits?
If I use the Shimano Cable puller with the SRAM hub will that work?

with only 3 gears the increments (mm) are not that far off:

SRAM T3 ====== 0, 5.4, 8.7
Shimano Nexus 3 = 0, 6.5, 7.8

How much tollerance is there? very little I presume

Can I switch the cable puller but leave the old Shimano cable in place.
