I also hang bikes on 16" studs and then squeeze more bikes in between hung from the wall a bit lower. It helps that I ride fairly narrow bars (mostly 40cm). I agree that it's not a big deal to angle the adjacent bikes a little bit out of the way when taking down or putting up the bike. I could perhaps squeeze in one more hook in between the Colnago and Merlin. Another suggestion is to use foam pads ("pool noodles") on the top tubes or at other contact points.
