However I've only used the short ones, TMK, and my crank arms go on with little effort on my part when using the tools provided by Shimano in the box. So personally I'm not curious in any way why one is longer than the other.
I do not argue, I want to find out, the "do not care" is not the answer still.

NB Not meaning to be making any snide remarks here, but for the fixing bolt specifically there's nothing in the box. There's two tools from Shimano sold separately for that and neither encourages over-tightening by their very design handle. Others like the FSA above or SRAM's GXP use the wave washer so one can tighten the main bolt all they want.

If anyone finds this post helpful in the future, then it's served its purpose - do not overtighten the cartridge bearings in the BB laterally.

I'll look for answers on the fixing bolt length still, if anyone knows ...
