I saw where you posted the same tip previously and did just that when I installed new Grab Ons on my
Cirrus, leaving on the factory tape which comfortably covers the bare metal. The 3rd set of Grab Ons I've installed after buying the Fuji TSV which came re-gripped by the very shop where it was purchased from originally.
