I considered selling them on eBay but I wouldn't buy a used helmet and I don't think other people should either. I figure if I give them away there's probably some poor soul who could use a helmet and would appreciate having it for free.

I recycled an old undamaged motorcycle helmet that I gave to a group that teaches first aid for motorcycle accidents. They need the helmets to demonstrate how to remove them in life threatening situations. I doubt you'd find anything like that for bicycle helmets, but it might be worth a phone call or two before you threw them out.
