Folks, another bike followed me home.... it's a 1982 (according to the Vintage Trek site) silver and blue 950 frame (I believe). My main interest in this bike is that in the early 80s I went to the bike shop in Steamboat Springs with my pal, and he bought one that looks exactly like this, with a full Suntour Superbe group. In doing some research, I found a few discrepancies around the model number - I feel pretty confident that this is a 950 frame, as it is Columbus, and the serial number lines up with 1982. Below shows the configuration of the 950 which was frame only, as I understand. I am pretty sure my bike is silver rather than "Pewter" so I am thinking maybe it's 1981.5?
Here is the configuration of the bike with components. As I understand it, the 957, which was white, was configured with a full Campy group. I think it had Campy dropouts, as mine does. The 959, as I understand, was configured with full Dura Ace, and I believe this one had Dura Ace dropouts, which were of a vertical design.
So, I think mine must have been the 950 frame, and the shop likely set it up with their choice of components. As such, I am going to set it up fully Campy, since I already have all that stuff available.
My friend and I go to a few rides each year, and the first one is first week of May. My objective is to show up with pretty much the same bike (same year, same colors) as his this year...!
This and the 970 were the only Columbus frames from Trek...
