That assumes the motorists are competent! I am convinced that the single biggest step to achieving mutual respect is to have more cyclists on the road. Today, for example, I was in a bad mood and tired of dealing with the so-called snow removal in this city, so I took the lane. I made no distinctions between narrow or wide lanes, how many lanes of traffic each way, etc. With the exception of one steep hill I just rode down the centre of the lane and didn't care what anyone thought about it. It was a great ride, and I had no problems whatsoever, BUT I have no doubt it was that easy because drivers here are used to cyclists, even in the winter.
