I'm an Idaho Stop practitioner, but if it's not legal in your state, as it's not in mine, you need to put on your big boy pants and deal with the consequences if you get called out for not following local traffic laws.

In addition, "when it's not needed," is a judgement call; based on your posting history, detailing descriptions of both your appearance and your actions, you shouldn't bet on getting the benefit of doubt when it comes to gray areas.
