Thanks everyone for all the solid advice. There is a lot of good information on this site for the returning roadie. The learning curve is steep. So many things have changed in 10-20 yrs. I feel like that guy just waking up after 20 year-long nap. Yes, I know I can't keep the quill stem, might just go with carbon bars and retire all that old stuff.
Any excuse to buy new stuff! Would like to keep something from the past just to have as an old retro -grouch!
So new compact cranks means the chain and everything has a narrower profile. Sounds like a good idea, really. Each development is logical lighter and stronger.
Shhesh! lots of new information, though.
One annoying thing is the frame didn't come with a seat post clamp so I have to search that out...
Thanks again for all your advice! Can't wait to ride into the future!

Jt
