The "heatmap" stuff is based on people's recorded rides. The alternative sources for maps don't have this data.

More detail might explain some of this. Garmin is using the same data* (Openstreetmap/OSM) as the alternative sources. The rail trail extension issue seems like the Garmin map isn't as up-to-date.

* Garmin uses its own data for points-of-interest (POI). Part of this is for "advertising revenue" and part of it is that OSM can be spotty with respect to POIs.
