People in San Diego and surrounding areas refer to their city as Dago. In that context it’s not a slur. Just like people in New Orleans refer to their city as “Nawlins.”

It's possibly anachronistic, but BITD that was a slur against people from Spain/Italy. Equivalent to calling someone from Ireland the shortened version of Michael. Also likely anachronistic.
