I think a lot of how those became anachronistic is that people from Spain/Italy and Ireland stopped being "out groups".
We switched from (horribly) caring about nationality to (horribly) caring only about skin color (or mostly). Lovecraft was horrified to find he had Welsh in him. Nowadays it's just "white". I had to explain to AG about the racist old man in Community being racist against Finns.
Would be wonderful if we didn't just swap our (collective) biases around and got rid of them...
