Correct, DX was introduced in 1990 with STI, though there was still a thumbshifter option. LX was also introduced for 1990 but didn't get the black finish on the crankarms and cantilevers until 1993. That's a bit late for thumbshifters. Maybe they were replaced when the previous owner add the stem extender.
