Based on a bunch of articles and book I’ve read, it seems that it’s not the intensity that is risky to the aging heart, it’s insufficient recovery time that leads to prolonged inflammation, which leads to heart muscle damage.

So the message for us older athletes is to recover well. It takes us longer to recover, so we need more of it.
