You can face the BB shell down to 68mm. But, to me, that's like putting a tourniquet around someone's neck to slow the bleeding of a head wound.

Personally I think some of the reported info is errant. No problemo. If the problem is solved, it's solved.
only other thing that could be factoring in is that the extra length spindle is required to have the small ring clear the chainstay. Then the question is how goofy is the chainline?
