And for the record, Darwin didn't understand how heredity worked, his theory was about what happens as a result of variation being hereditary. At the time, there were other theories of evolution - Lamarck thought ancestral giraffes stretched their necks to reach high trees and passed the result down. Darwin's insight, and Wallace's, was how nature "guided" the process of change.
