I converted my '97 Mongoose Iboc into a single back in 2004 - used the singleator and a cog spacer kit from urbane to get chain tension / chainline worked out on an XT rear hub - worked out just fine, and I've referred to the thing as the 'Tranq Tank' ever since, due to the inordinately high levels of exhaustion I achieve by trying to ride it as fast as my Ciocc
Winterbourne - those grips WERE hot... I asked the guy derek (I think that was his name?) about it, and he said that he had fabricated them for about $10 from leather he sourced at a shop on king st. and some carpet tape. The trick, aparently, is that there's 2 layers of that fine fine leather there, sandwiched with carpet tape, for extra padding. I'm going to try it on my touring bike.
