I think you did the right thing in this situation, with this particular group. But, a second group might get pissed at you for not taking pulls, a third group might
insist you stay on the back, because they don't trust someone in the pace line that they don't know, and a fourth group might get pissed because your jersey doesn't match. You need to take the temperature of each group and adjust accordingly.
