1989 Schwinn Aluminum 754 frameset - 52.5cm - Paint by Gary Cole

This 754 is a bit of a special one. First, it has been refinished in an ultra-fine metallic purple by retired master painter, Gary Cole - right down to the inclusion of factory-style bright lime yellow Schwinn/Aluminum/754 decals under the clear. Secondly, in the process, the original steel front fork was replaced with a Sakae-crown aluminum replacement which, honestly, looks really similar to the original sloping crown steel fork.

That said, I can't even begin to explain how absolutely stunning this thing is in the sun, so I'll let the pictures do the talking. This is entirely a "stock looking custom" job - the 754 never came in this color combo. The decals are a bit larger than those on the factory original livery, but the typefaces are perfectly on-point - pretty sure they're vinyl stickers under the clear. As a repaint, this doesn't carry the Paramount Design Group sticker on the lower seattube, or Schwinn's wet rim nag decal on the downtube. There is a small "PAINT BY COLE" logo on the bottom of the seattube that denotes the paint job's provenance. There's also a braze-on front derailer adapter that I don't want to remove if not necessary; no need to risk cracking any paint. There are some chips from age here and there; this thing was literally hung up unceremoniously clanking up against other frames in an LBS.

This is a frame with no pinch bolt, so it includes a Suntour expander-wedge seatpost. However, the top right half has a crack in it. From what I've read, this seems to be a recurring issue with these posts, so you might want to explore your own expander-wedge alternative...or TIG it if you so choose.

That said, there are two issues to note:

1. The PO seems to have had chain suck issues which scratched up the chainstay behind the rings. No major damage apparent, but the touchups in this area are atrocious. Thankfully, not a terribly visible spot.
2. There is a surprising amount of paint loss under the right chainstay, and the riveted-on derailer cable stop is missing. I dare say the two events are connected, and it might have been related to the aforementioned chain suck. There are no cracks or structural frame damage to this area, so if you have or can source a replacement cable stop, this should be an easy thing to replace and pop-rivet in - this was not a welded part and it was pop-riveted from factory, just like the cable guides on top are. Also, despite the area of paint loss, it is mercifully hidden quite well from just about all angles except upside-down. Interested in anyone willing to sell me this piece too - I've got the tool and rivets to install it.

Frame has a Tioga Beartrap headset in it which spins nice and is included.
