The old style knurled-knob versions appear in black and chrome. What is the date/era significance to the finish?

(My two, almost certainly original, mid-60s and mid-70’s Campy equipped bikes have black. I have an early 60’s Campy equipped bike with chrome, though this bike has a checkered past, having some components swapped with later.)
