Earlier versions used plastic that eventually became brittle and cracked, but the current bottles are far more durable. The ones I'm using now have already lasted a few years, with no sign that they'll deteriorate any time soon.

The only problem is that very few convenience stores carry the 24-oz sport bottles these days for some mysterious reason.

Although I've done the same from time to time, Gatorade, water and pop bottle, and metal, I find it difficult to use a capped bottle while riding. It's a two handed operation and/or risk of dropping the cap out of my mouth. There's a reason bike water bottles are like they are. That said, I can't remember paying $10 for one, because most I have are very old and/or free promotional items.
