I've been riding the 79 Trek 930 off and on, but it feels like the frame, or rear dropout, is cracked. Just sometimes. I guess I'll have to go over it with a fine tooth comb. I feel it when leaning into a tight turn. It feels like the chain stays are not fixed solidly. Columbus SP
It's cracked sometimes? Maybe it's the wheel?
I had a Nishiki break the chainstay all the way through, just in front of the left dropout. It was making noise so when I got home I looked at it and the axle was bent. This happened to me a lot with 6 speed freewheel axles so I popped in a new axle and went riding. Still had the noise and I felt like a real dumbass for riding it with a broken frame.
