Plenty of innovations have solved real problems. A few from memory:
  • high pressure clinchers with hooked rims
  • indexed shifting
  • integrated brake/shift levers
  • carbon fiber for frames, rims, components
  • disc brakes
  • low pressure tubeless tires

Not on that list:
  • electronic shifting
