I'm not sure what a "normal centerpull bridge cable" is -- this one looks like what I use -- but I agree that the angles look all wrong on that front cantilever. To be effective, the cable and the lever arm should form a 90 degree angle.

If memory serves, you can also use a Brake/Gear cable as a straddle cable, as long as you use separate cable hanger. (Someone correct me on which type of cable to use)
