I use a strip of inner tube under clamps to protect the paint - kickstand clamps too. Sometimes it's a little annoying to get it to stay in place while you tighten the clamp, but I prefer not to have to deal with the glue residue from tape. It seems to work well, but I haven't been doing it long enough to know if the tubes break down or cause problems over the long haul (decades). Is there some reason why nobody else does this?
