Hey James. It's a triple crank that I converted to a sub-compact double. In this case, the big ring needs to be installed on the inboard side of the big spider. If it was installed outboard, there would be a very large gap to the small ring and the chain would fall off between the two rings in that case. I've modified a few cranks in this manner and they work perfectly. They do, as you point out, look a little "off", but function>form for this build.
