An improperly seated axle in vertical dropouts can make the difference between a derailleur that clears the spokes and one that does not.
If we take Larry at his word, and look at the pictures he posted, it’s clear the chain dropped between the cogs and spokes, and the rear derailleur never got caught in the spokes.
