The threading on a OLD alloy A-9 lock-top nut (one I have anyway) is no more than 7mm, (wish I could be more accurate but the 'depth rod' on my caliper broke off!)
I just measured two SL alloy nuts, both say Stronglight on them. Both are just under 8 mm inside to the bottom of the flange. I apologize for my wildly inaccurate guess earlier!

Poking around in my headsets box I found that somehow I ended up with a fully plastic SL C11 headset, with the steel conical rings and rollers like the original A9. Everything else, including the threads, is plastic. And white! I'm having trouble envisioning the right bike to put that weirdo on. It weighs 59 g, so about an ounce lighter than the aluminum A9. The weight of one gulp of water from your bottle. You want real weight savings in a headset, gotta be Nylfor, which has no steel at all, even the balls and races are plastic. About 30 g. Now we're talking! TWO sips of water lighter!! Yes you might die from using it, but hey, two sips of water lighter!
