In theory, yes. But people make mistakes and eventually you may go into that combo with catastrophic results.
Like I said, on my bike, it just doesn't jump up there. I do like using the big ring a lot and felt the incorrect shift before I smashed anything.
I think the "Shadow" derailleur allows it to tuck up in front of the large rear sprockets where it is relatively safe.
