Sounds rather simple, but I could not instructions at Microshift nor any other shifter manufacturer.
What type of shifter? With a grip-shift the small ring is the most forward position, clockwise looking from the RHS of the bike (or closed throttle if you ride motorcycles). With thumbies or triggers the BIG ring is the most forward position, pushing with your thumb. Generally I'd expect "1" to indicate the smallest ring and "3" to indicate the largest ring (but note that rarely systems are "normal high" on the front and "normal low" on the rear, with spring-assisted shifting).
