It will be 68 or 73mm at the frame... it is or was a triple chainring crankset, originally... most likely a Sugino brand crank... Suntour Shifters/Ders.
1988 says it was a "urban" ATB, more of a hybrid so I wouldn't be surprised to see 68mm, and yes original, that year anyway, was a Sugino triple undoubtedly square taper
