It all rather depends on your double crank...

I started off with a 110mm bcd crank (1984 Miyata, Sugino crankset) and the big ring was a 52t. It was easy for me to just buy a 50t and a 34t in 110mm.

The 110mm cranks have been around for decades, I don't understand why 130mm became the default, and why the world has only just "discovered" 110mm. Weird. The smaller crank is sooooooo much more versatile.
