There are "defensible space" rules that specify clearing up to 100 feet from any structure. Bass Lake (pictured above) is in Madera County, which has this requirement:
"
Fuels shall be maintained in a condition so that a wildfire burning under average weather conditions would be unlikely to ignite the structure."
My parents once owned a cabin in Bass Lake, surrounded by 100-150 ft. pine trees, and we had to clear the property of fuel (mostly pine needles) often. But those huge living trees were never considered a threat in a fire. The forest was healthy then.
My sister used to live in Auberry, and their property had lots of these tall pines. A few years ago, they all died at once due from drought. Cal Fire required them to remove them.
