Thanks for the tips! One other thing I always check for is how warped the crank is. Reverse spin it while sighting down it. If it's significantly warped beyond ~1 mm that's a no-no.

And yes, you're limited in 27" tire size these days. And I really loved the 27" X 1" tires I had on my Raleigh SuperCourse before it went to heaven. There is still one source for those I found in a cursory search.
