While in the small chainring & largest sprocket, set the low limit screw to have minimal clearance with chain.
Put shifter in lowest position and then attach cable on the FD in the slot with cable tight. Shift to middle position and use inline adjuster to set cable tension, again with minimal clearance while in the largest sprocket in back. Check that the housing that you have under the BB isn't too long to restrict the FD attachment when you try to shift to the largest chainring.
This should be about the correct cable tension. Shift to largest ring & smallest sprocket to check clearance for your highest gear ratio. Check for minimal clearance between outer cage & chain. Set high limit screw for this position, with a little additional outward movement of the cage still possible.
If this doesn't work, check that the cable housing is properly cut & prepared. Sheldon's site has some tips for preparing index cables.
Will do and will check Sheldon's take on this. Somewhere in there I am losing proper tension. With only two lengths of cable, one from shifter to downtube, and the other under the bracket, hard to see where I am losing the tension. Will check for slippage at the lockdown bolt too.
