What you might want to find out is what type of spokes and nipples were used to build the wheel, that is where the builder will usually cut costs a bit. Even if the spokes are not that great and they used aluminum nipples it would still be a good set and you can upgrade the parts as needed.
the 6-bolt xt wheelset says it has "DT Butted Silver spokes"
the centrelock rotor wheelset has "DT spokes, DT nipples"
i could also get an XTR (centrelock with included adapters)/XC717 for $329, but i think that might be more than i want to spend...
