As we have discussed in a previous thread (which I can no longer find), I suggested that you can get a burner for emergencies. Your objection was that activating said burner costs a few dollars a month.
Actually, you may not even need to activate the SIM in the burner; you may be able to just use the SIM in your regular phone, depending on the carrier. If your regular phone uses a nano-SIM, you may need an adapter:
