ok.. so i'd suggest a Cassette/freehub.. and i'd build it with an 8 speed Shimano HG-31 11-34 cassette and a Deore rear hub and derailleur.. a bit more for the hub and der, but well worth it....
$21 for the 8 spCassette, shipped... ebay.. check other sources...
deore derailleurs are $20 to $60, depending on age and condition.. "9 speed derailleur" WILL work fine with an 8 sp. setup.... in fact, you COULD go 9 speed for the same approximate costs...hint, hint...

same freehub required....
Go with a 30 t0 36 single front, depending on the terrain near you, and how you will use your newly built schwinn....
I'd build up the "8 or 9 gears" bike first... and consider the SS setup later.
