what I am after is a somewhat flexible shoe I can use when road riding so that I can walk into a grocery store or a hardware store mid-ride and not wipe out. (there are often pitstops on my road rides)
But it seems an SPD Sl or Look Delta cleat would be worse - they are really raised and impossible to walk on.
I'll post another thread asking advice on the ideal shoe style for my needs.
I don't need a true hard core MTB or Cross shoe (as I am never clamouring up muddy hillsides.)
a soft laceup touring shoe seems too flimsy (and so a bit inefficient)
and a road shoe seems too rigid (and so unwalkable.)
Look for SPD compatible "touring" shoes. They have recessed cleats, but with a less aggressive tread. Not really any lighter than MTB shoes though and usually still a fairly stiff sole, so I personally wouldn't think twice about using either for road rides.
