Actually, the worms merely went about their business. It was the invading, other-world humans who killed 'em. Those people were effectively were at war with anything that got in their way of "spice" extraction (which was created by those worms, not that they would have appreciated that). The people who actually lived there were of the live-and-let-live types, treating them as another co-habitant of the planet, sort of employing their great size and speed much like people use horses, and getting the "magic elixir" from baby worms. Those things "killed" no more than any other animal in the world, per Nature's laws.

Either way, that was utterly fiction, a novel.

So, it ought to be okay, from a philosophical standpoint.
