Well I wouldn't say you
had to. We used to work on Phil hubs back in the '70s, replacing bearings, axles, and end caps for different spacings. Not easy though. I had a very well-equipped shop (Santana Cycles). Definitely way easier to replace the bearings on a Phil than on a Hi-E
