Done well it should be as comfortable, and depending on things like wrists and elbows it can be better (my trainer bike is still set up with tri bars because it takes pressure off of them). It's obviously not a thing for sprinting, but it also only took me a couple of dozen hours to get quite comfortable not just with the position but with the handling as well. I'm also far from a deeply experienced cyclist, but over Covid I was really trying to get ready for tri again before a crash on my road bike took that away.
There was a gravel tri here and one guy used a tri bike on skinny tires. That stunned even me.
