I don't race but I shave. I admit, I think it makes me look SEXY! I love the feel but my wife is not a fan. I only shave to my shorts. Then I do a secret baboon style clipping of the inner groin (oh yeah, you know the spots I am talking about) hair to reduce pulling, rubbing, etc. You want to just clip this stuff short, not shave it or you will have serious itching issues. I have found the baboon clip to increase inner butt comfort dramatically. I personally believe that shaving of the legs was a natural evolution of the baboon clip.
