I haven't met anyone who hasn't built wheels who really understands how to true them, so I agree with your post.

Except you don't need too much more than a spoke wrench and a good ear. When I'm at home or on the road, I use a bike frame and fork for truing and three stacks of books or blocks for dishing. I play a little guitar so I'm good with the musical note method of tension. Shop tools are real nice though if you can get them.
