What I do in similar situations is check behind for traffic, then signal a left to take the lane and move to the extreme left, then apply brakes with both hands, then signal the turn and take one more look behind, then my attention goes to oncoming traffic on the road I'm on, and then the one I'm turning into.
My practice also.

Or pulling to the right shoulder to dismount then wait for traffic to clear before proceeding across onto my next route segment.
