If racing is what motivates them to get out and train, that's a good thing. But simply setting a goal may be just as useful.
I quit racing decades ago, but I do like to have events on the calendar to train for. I just signed up for the
Low Key Hill Climbs, even though I'm nowhere near fit enough at the moment to do well. It's something to give me a nudge out the door.
